IT’S A HAT TRICK: FIESTA WINS AGAIN

The new Ford Fiesta which was launched earlier this year has made such a great impression on the industry that it has scored not one, but three awards in 2009 for three of its model variants.

The Fiesta LX was named the Best Small Car from Australia’s Best Cars, while the innovative Fiesta ECOnetic was award Best Green Car from Carsguide.com and the Fiesta CL walked away with Drive’s Best Small Car Under $20,000 award.

The Fiesta is surely one of the biggest success stories in the automotive industry in 2009; we’re certainly proud of it at Adrian Brien.

BE PREPARED THIS CHRISTMAS!

As the days start to get warmer and longer and we head toward the holiday season, you might be starting to plan your own road trip; the open road awaits. But first, make sure that you'll provide safe and enjoyable driving conditions for you and your passengers. Here are some tips from the service specialists at Adrian Brien Automotive to help you prepare for your trip:

• Have your oil filter changed. Dirty oil or a contaminated filter can cause excessive engine wear, which can lead to poor vehicle performance or premature engine failure. While having your oil changed, have the service specialist check your belts and hoses, transmission fluid level, and battery and electrical system.

• Properly inflate your tyres. Proper tyre inflation can make a big difference in the way your vehicle rides and handles, improving fuel mileage by more than 3 percent when maintained regularly. Also, remember to properly inflate your spare tyre.

• Have your brakes inspected regularly. Since your brakes wear gradually over time, the loss of braking power often goes undetected. Make sure to have your brake pads, shoes and all related equipment inspected.

• Look for leaks. Be sure to check both the coolant level and your air conditioning system's refrigerant. Leaks in either system may cause your vehicle - and you - to overheat.

• Have your shock absorbers checked. Your vehicle's shocks and struts should be checked in conjunction with wheel alignment or if you notice excessive bouncing, swaying, rocking or nose-diving while braking.

• Find ways to keep young passengers occupied. There are many activities you can provide for kids in the car. Pack a kit of books, maps, their favourite CD’s and travel games.

• Most importantly, plan to take breaks. Everyone needs a break when travelling long distances. To ward off boredom and exhaustion, schedule frequent stops for meals or just some time to let the kids run around. Remember to stop, revive and survive!

QUOTE OF THE MONTH
“Christmas! The very word brings joy to our hearts. No matter how we may dread the rush, the long Christmas lists for gifts and cards to be bought and given--when Christmas Day comes there is still the same warm feeling we had as children, the same warmth that enfolds our hearts and our homes.”

ENJOYING THE SILLY SEASON

The silly season is only just around the corner, so it is time to start planning your celebrations and checking out what’s happening around town.

With Christmas parties and end of year celebrations, it’s time to let your hair down and relax a little while enjoying the fantastic summer sun.

But there is a down-side to all this partying and it is important to remember to do everything in moderation otherwise you’ll end up paying for it later.

Here’s some of our advice for surviving the end of year celebrations:
  • Be smart!  Don’t be remembered at your work Christmas party as the person who started table-top dancing while belting out your favourite karaoke tune only to fall over and do the walk of shame the next day on a set of crutches.  Remember that you have to spend five days a week with these people, so don’t do anything you might regret later!
  • If you’re going to be outside, remember to slip, slop, slap.  With summer comes the harsh sun and the last thing you want is to look like a red tomato in all your celebration photos.
  • Don’t overdo it.  Although it’s tempting to attend every party you’re invited to, and eat all the food that is on offer, it doesn’t mean you have to.  Do everything in moderation, as you don’t want to spend the first six months of the New Year recovering from the end of year celebrations.
  • But most importantly, DON’T DRINK AND DRIVE!  If you know you’re going to be having a few drinks, leave the car at home, and catch a taxi, public transport, or get a lift.
HONEY GLAZED TURKEY WITH ORANGE-PECAN STUFFING

INGREDIENTS

4.5kg turkey
2 medium oranges (480g), unpeeled, chopped coarsely
1 cup (250ml) water
2 cups (500ml) chicken stock
½ cup (125ml) bourbon
50g butter, melted
2 tablespoons orange juice
½ cup (175g) honey
2 tablespoons plain flour

orange-pecan stuffing

20g butter
1 large brown onion (200g), chopped finely
4 cups (280g) stale breadcrumbs
1 cup (120g) coarsely chopped roasted pecans
1 tablespoon finely grated orange rind
2 tablespoons orange juice
½ cup (125ml) water
40g butter, melted
2 eggs, beaten lightly

METHOD

Preheat oven to 180°C/160°C fan-forced.

Discard neck from turkey. Rinse turkey under cold water; pat dry inside and out with absorbent paper. Tuck wings under turkey; fill large cavity with orange, tie legs together with kitchen string.

Place the water, stock and bourbon into large flameproof baking dish; place turkey on oiled wire rack over dish. Brush turkey all over with butter; cover dish tightly with two layers of oiled foil. Roast 2 hours 10 minutes. Uncover turkey; brush with half of the combined orange juice and honey.

Roast, uncovered, about 50 minutes or until browned all over and cooked through, brushing frequently with remaining honey mixture. Remove turkey from dish; cover, stand 20 minutes.

Meanwhile, make orange-pecan stuffing.

Strain turkey juices from dish into large jug. Skim 2 tablespoons of the oil from juices; return oil to dish. Add flour to dish; cook, stirring, until mixture bubbles and browns. Add juices; cook, stirring, until gravy boils and thickens. Strain gravy into same jug.

Serve turkey with stuffing, accompany with a kumara mash and steamed green beans.
