Car Care Tips - Regular Maintenance Helps

Regular maintenance checks and simple service can greatly reduce the cost of car ownership. Most of the checks and services described here can be done at little or no cost. Best of all, they are quick and easy to do and they can save time, money and inconvenience now and later.

Always refer to your owner's manual when performing any maintenance task on your vehicle. Periodically your car should have a thorough inspection by a qualified technician.

Here are a few tips from our Service Manager, Mark Whittington:

Check the antifreeze/coolant levels weekly
Some cars have transparent reservoirs with level markings. Fill to level marking with 50/50 solution of anti-freeze/coolant and water. Always check cooling system levels when engine is cold. Caution - Do not remove radiator pressure cap when engine is hot.

Check motor oil weekly
When engine is at normal operating temperature, remove the dipstick and wipe it clean. Insert it fully and remove it again. If it is low, add the specified oil for your vehicle. To maintain peak performance, change oil every 7500km or every 6 months, whichever comes first. Replace oil filter with every change.

Inspect belts and hoses monthly
Replace worn, glazed or frayed belts. Tighten them when more than 1.25cm of slack can be depressed between the pulleys. Vehicles with spring-loaded belt tension require no adjustment. Replace bulging, rotten, or brittle hoses and tighten clamps. Replenish engine coolant with correct type and concentration. If a hose looks bad, or feels too soft or too hard, it should be replaced.

Check transmission fluid monthly
With engine running at normal operating temperature and parking brake on, remove the dipstick and wipe dry. Insert it in and remove it once again. Check owner handbook for location of dipstick. Note- Some transmissions do not have dipsticks. Add the approved type of fluid, if needed. Caution: Do not overfill.
*Other weekly checks should include windscreen washers reservoirs, brake and clutch fluid reservoirs and battery electrolyte levels.
